BMC set to build $189M care center
In order to treat more patients, Boston Medical Center is building a new, $189 million ambulatory care building.
And the sprawling, state-of-the-art complex will be financed, in part, with $70 million in tax credits from four organizations, including the Massachusetts Health and Educational Facilities Authority, the public agency that provides low-cost loans to nonprofit health, educational and arts organizations.
Gov. Deval Patrick applauded the collaborative project.
“This project will allow Boston Medical Center to provide care to many more patients, regardless of their ability to pay, while creating new permanent jobs and hundreds of construction jobs,” he said in a statement.
Boston Medical Center is a private, nonprofit academic medical center located in the city’s South End.
The bustling facility provides health care for many of the region’s poorest people. In fact, in 2007 alone, 126,039 sick people came through the medical center’s emergency room.
Officials there say that the new ambulatory building will serve as a foundation of future growth - at the medical center and in the neighborhood.
