NV: Smith’s Creates 270 New Jobs with Reveal of Henderson Distribution Center

Jun 08, 2018

With the assistance of Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance and partnership with the City of Henderson, Smith’s Food & Drug Stores plans to open a nearly $13.5 million dry-good distribution center in Henderson, Nevada. The grocer will lease the new facility from Panattoni Development, the entity that developed the site.

Smith’s Food & Drug will move forward with completion of the project due to the tax incentives approved by the Board of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development.

The LVGEA, Southern Nevada’s regional economic development authority, has been working with the Smith’s team for the past year with the application of incentives, as well as the site selection process and connecting it with the City of Henderson.

“We are thrilled that Smith’s, a leader in its industry, has chosen Southern Nevada as its expansion location for a new distribution center,” said LVGEA Chief Operating Officer Jared Smith. “Southern Nevada’s business-friendly environment, low cost of doing business and access to 61 million people in one day’s drive prove our area is an ideal place for logistics operations to grow and thrive. Smith’s strategic decision to expand in our market speaks volumes about the strengths of our community and the benefits we offer.”

This is the first food distribution center for Smith’s located in the state of Nevada with a projection to provide nearly 270 new jobs. Due to the grocer’s recent growth strategy, Restock Kroger, the company has focused on creating an additional presence in Nevada, which offers advantages through lower operating costs, economic incentives, and a pro-business climate.

“We are delighted that Smith’s Food & Drug Stores has selected Henderson to be the home of their new distribution center and with the jobs that will be created in our community by this project,” said Henderson Mayor Debra March. “Our business-friendly environment, central location for distribution and outstanding quality of life make Henderson a premier location for commerce and we welcome this latest investment by Smith’s Food & Drug Stores in our city.”

The new 482,000 square-foot distribution facility will provide more than 8,000 items allowing the grocer to ship products to Smith’s stores in the southwest U.S. including 44 in Nevada, 24 in New Mexico, 5 in Arizona and 3 in Utah.

“More than 450,000 customers shop in our stores every day, and our goal is to always have our shelves stocked with the variety and selection our shoppers want,” said Kenny Kimball, president of Smith’s Food & Drug. “The new facility will help our logistics team improve lead times and drive efficiencies for our store and ultimately our customers.”

In addition, the distribution center will operate as a Zero Waste facility diverting more than 90% of waste from the landfill. Smith’s Food & Drug Stores has a commitment to environmental sustainability through their Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative by reducing their impact on the environment using natural resources responsibly and minimizing waste in all their operations.

Smith’s Food & Drug Smith’s Food & Drug Stores is a division of the Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR), one of the nation’s largest retail grocers.  Today Smith’s operates 140 stores in seven western states including 44 in Nevada. For more information please visit www.smithsfoodanddrug.com.
