Cargo Composites, a maker of air cargo containers, today announced the establishment of its new headquarters and assembly facility in Berkeley County. The $700,000 investment is expected to generate 40 new jobs.
“Cargo Composites is excited to be a part of the Lowcountry’s rapidly growing aerospace industry and to be located in close proximity to companies such as Boeing,” said Tom Pherson, president of Cargo Composites. “Cargo Composites is already acclimating itself to the local business community and working with such resources such as Charleston Regional Development Alliance, Berkeley County, The South Carolina Department of Commerce, readySC and the South Carolina Manufacturing Extension Partnership (SCMEP), capitalizing on several different programs to make the transition smooth, expand our marketing efforts, and continue to grow the business. We look forward to actively contributing to growth of the aerospace supply chain in South Carolina.”
Cargo Composites will locate its new operations in a leased facility at 1026 Legrand Blvd. in Berkeley County. Demand for the company’s products has been growing for both domestic and international locations. This location represents its first facility on the East Coast.
“We appreciate Cargo Composites’ decision to establish its new operations here and celebrate the 40 new jobs the company will create. South Carolina continues to distinguish itself as a place where businesses of all sizes can set up shop and succeed,” said Gov. Nikki Haley.
Cargo Composites’ containers are used by the world’s leading airlines to safely and securely transport cargo around the world. Cargo Composites’ patented composite material is made with a unique honeycomb core that optimizes both weight and strength, creating more durability and lower fuel costs to airlines.
“South Carolina’s aerospace-related sector continues to grow, and today’s announcement is the latest example. We welcome Cargo Composites to our state’s business community and look forward to the company’s success here,” said Bobby Hitt, Secretary of Commerce.
The company plans to be fully operational by January 2012 with its first delivery scheduled for March 2012. Cargo Composites will ship its finished products around the world from its new 32,000-square-foot plant.
“Aerospace and advanced materials are rapidly growing sectors of Charleston’s global economy. Today’s announcement further demonstrates that our region’s workforce has the technical skills and competencies necessary for innovative companies to locate here and ramp up quickly,” said CRDA Board Chairman R.M. Singletary. “Cargo Composites’ decision to relocate its global headquarters and new assembly plant to our market reinforces that targeted economic development efforts prove effective.”
“Cargo Composites and its cutting edge product line is a welcome addition to Berkeley County’s growing industry base,” said Berkeley County Council Chairman and County Supervisor Dan Davis. “We are confident our community will greatly contribute to its success and product growth for years to come.”
The company will begin hiring for the new positions immediately. Anyone interested in job opportunities with the company should contact the SCWorks Berkeley Center at (843) 761-4400.
