NY: Outdoor Retailer REI Co-Op to Open Store in Huntington Station, With 60 Employees

Three-day celebration filled with community partners, outdoor vendors, giveaways, and more

REI Co-op will open its new Huntington Station, N.Y., store on November 3, with a three-day celebration filled with outdoor brands, nonprofit partners, an afternoon social and more. The store will hire 60 employees.

Located at Huntington Shopping Center on Walt Whitman Road, the 21,100 square-foot store features a wide assortment of outdoor gear and apparel for camping, hiking, cycling, running, fitness, paddling and more. A specialty bike shop will be staffed with certified mechanics to tune or repair equipment to help cyclists ride year-round. A ski and snowboard shop will mount bindings and tune gear so that riders are ready to hit the slopes.

“Our team of 60 experts is ready to serve the Long Island outdoor community and partner with local groups to welcome everyone into natural places,” said Graig Ciminelli, REI Huntington Station store manager. “Regardless of skill or activity level, everyone deserves safe and equitable access to the outdoors. With our knowledge, expertise and stewardship, we look forward to fostering that access for this community.” 

Each day of the grand opening, REI’s doors will open at 10 a.m. with giveaways available while supplies last. Community members who join the morning festivities will enjoy free Favor Coffee and receive an exclusive camp mug with a donation to Friends of the Bay.

An outdoor social will be hosted every afternoon from 1 to 5 p.m. with music, nonprofits and outdoor brands. Outdoor brands will include Arc’teryx, Adidas, Altra, Black Diamond, Brooks, Cotopaxi, Gregory, Hydro Flask, Keen, Kuat, Nikwax, Mountain House, Nuun, Oboz, Osprey, Silca and Smartwool. Also joining the three-day celebration will be regional nonprofits working to increase outdoor experiences for all people including Black Girls Do Bike and 
Concerned Long Island Mountain Bicyclists (CLIMB).

As the country’s largest consumer co-op, anyone is welcome to shop and tap into REI’s expertise. Members who join the co-op enjoy a range of benefits. There are more than 847,000 REI members in the DMA and more than 665,000 in New York State.Once open, REI Huntington Station will be the seventh store in the Tri-State region. Closest locations to the co-op’s new store include Carle Place, New York (12 miles away, opened 2011); Norwalk, Connecticut (20 miles away, opened 2010); SoHo in Manhattan, New York (31 miles away, opened 2011); Paramus, New Jersey (34 miles away, opened 2011).
