Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development Secretary Dominick Murray joined Salisbury Mayor Jim Ireton and officials from Jubilant Cadista Pharmaceuticals, a generic prescription pharmaceuticals company, to break ground on an expansion of the company’s U.S. headquarters in Salisbury. The expansion, which will be completed in fourth quarter of 2014, will double the company’s facility and include additional space for production, packing, warehouse and distribution, enabling it to double the number of products it produces. In addition, the company, which grew its employment base from 30 in 2005 to 300 this year, plans to add as many as 200 employees over the next five years. Plans for the expansion were announced in November 2011 as part of Governor Martin O’Malley’s trade mission to India, after the Governor met with officials from the company’s India-based parent Jubilant Life Sciences, part of the Jubilant Group.
“It is a testament to our outstanding workforce and supportive climate for life sciences companies that a world-class company like Cadista Pharmaceuticals has chosen to expand and add jobs on our Eastern Shore,” said Governor O’Malley. “Our trade mission to India – the first by a sitting Maryland Governor – was a tremendous success. We brought home more than $60 million in business deals for Maryland companies and we are continuing to see companies, like Cadista, invest in Maryland.”
“When our parent company, Jubilant Life Sciences Limited, acquired a majority stake in this company eight years ago, there were about 30 people working here,” said Scott Delaney, CEO of Jubilant Cadista. “Today, nearly 300 employees help to produce 14 product families at this facility. The site expansion will allow us to grow and accommodate our plans of doubling the number of products over the next two years. During the next several years, the addition of these and possibly more products currently in the pipeline will open opportunities for the addition of up to 200 or more jobs. This kind of rapid growth could not, and cannot, happen without tremendous support from our parent company and the encouragement of the city of Salisbury, Wicomico County and the State of Maryland.”
