NC: Heating Manufacturer Tutco to Expand, Add 90 Jobs in Buncombe County

Jun 26, 2013

Governor Pat McCrory and North Carolina Commerce Secretary Sharon Decker announced that Tutco, Inc. will expand its manufacturing facility in Buncombe County.  The company plans to create 90 jobs and invest more than $500,000 over the next three years in Arden.

“Our state’s strong legacy in manufacturing continues to encourage companies like Tutco, Inc. to expand in our great state,” said Governor McCrory. “We’re proud of our manufacturing heritage and want to reignite that reputation.”

Tutco is the world’s largest supplier of open coil heating elements.  Producing 35,000 to 38,000 heaters a day, the company holds 80 percent of U.S. patents in open coil heating technology.  Tutco heating components can be found in commercial applications, including refrigeration, HVAC, appliance, lab equipment and vending.

“Tutco’s decision to expand their Buncombe County facility is great news for the region and state,” said Sharon Decker, North Carolina Secretary of Commerce. “Our commitment to spurring economic growth continues to bring new jobs to North Carolina families.”

Salaries will vary by job function, but the average annual payroll for the new jobs will be nearly $2.1 million, plus benefits.

The project was made possible in part by a performance-based grant from the One North Carolina Fund of up to $98,000. The One NC Fund provides financial assistance, through local governments, to attract business projects that will stimulate economic activity and create new jobs in the state. Companies receive no money up front and must meet job creation and investment performance standards to qualify for grant funds.  These grants also require and are contingent upon local matches.

"Tutco’s decision to bring nearly 100 manufacturing jobs to Arden is great news for the hard-working folks of Buncombe County," said Representative Tim Moffitt. "We're grateful for Tutco’s decision to expand here and we're looking forward to working with them for many years to come."

Other partners that helped with this project include: the N.C. Department of Commerce, N.C. Community Colleges, Buncombe County, the City of Asheville and the Economic Development Coalition of Asheville-Buncombe County.
