PA: Allegheny County Robotics Co. to Expand, Create 25 New Jobs

Governor Tom Corbett announced that Carnegie Robotics, LLC is expanding its headquarters and manufacturing facility in Lawrenceville, Allegheny County adding at least 25 new jobs over the project period. This is the 7th jobs announcement in Allegheny County this year with the resulting total job creation projected to be more than 1100 for the county.  

“Carnegie Robotics, LLC is a great example of how we can partner with entrepreneurs and educational institutions to grow our economy and create new job opportunities,” Corbett said. “The company started as an idea at Carnegie Mellon and has now grown to more than 20 employees with an additional 25 jobs expected to result from this expansion.”

To support the company’s growth, Carnegie Robotics will expand from its 6,427-square-foot office and manufacturing space in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh to a new 31,000-square-foot site in the same section of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County. The company is projected to invest more than $1.7 million to support the expansion and purchase new equipment.

"Carnegie Robotics has relied heavily on the southwest Pennsylvania region to build this company over the past several years; from advanced machined parts, electronics and coatings to recruiting heavily from Carnegie Mellon and the talented local workforce. We have found Pittsburgh is a great place for entrepreneurship as well as a magnet for attracting talent,” John Bares, President and CEO said. “The assistance provided by the state helps us expand our business further.”

The company received a funding offer from the Department of Community and Economic Development including $50,000 in Job Creation Tax Credits and an $11,250 Guaranteed Free Training grant to be used to train its new workforce. An $850,000, 10-year, low-interest loan at 1.5 percent from the Machinery and Equipment Loan Fund was also included.

Carnegie Robotics specializes in the transition of emerging robotics technology from research and development to production. The company was formed in May 2010 as a spin-out from the National Robotics Engineering Consortium of Carnegie Mellon to commercialize state of the art technology developed at the university and elsewhere.  Target markets include the agricultural, mining, defense, heavy equipment and oil and gas production industries, as well as other niche markets in which advanced field robotics provides measurable return on investment.
