L3 Technologies Inc. won a $22.1 million contract with the U.S Navy, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.
The New York-based firm’s Interstate Electronics Corp. division got the one-year deal to perform flight test instrumentation program management, operations planning and logistics support.
Nearly half of the work will happen in Cape Canaveral, while most will happen in California. Smaller parts of the contract will happen in Georgia, Virginia, Washington, Maryland and the United Kingdom.
L3 normally does a lot of military work in Orlando and on Florida’s Space Coast, and there may be even more on the way, thanks to one of the biggest deals in the defense industry.
L3 Technologies (NYSE: LLL) announced in mid-October a $33.5 billion merger deal with Melbourne-based defense giant Harris Corp. (NYSE: HRS) Once the merger is finalized in early 2019, the company will be called L3 Harris Technologies Inc. and will be based in Melbourne, leading to hundreds more jobs in the area and the possibility of grabbing more contract work.
Military contracts contribute jobs and subcontractor opportunities to the local economy, and Central Florida is a major player in the defense industry. The region snags about $4 billion in government contracts each year, the Orlando Economic Partnership reported, because the nation’s Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines simulation operations are based in Central Florida Research Park. That work helps make Orlando the modeling, simulation and training capital of the world.
