Multimatic Inc., an automotive components manufacturer headquartered in Toronto, Canada, announced that it plans to expand its production operations in Butler with the goal of creating more than 200 new jobs by 2013.
Multimatic, which specializes in the production of automotive mechanisms, complex welded assemblies and suspension components, as well as the design and development of automotive body and chassis systems, plans to make a significant investment in machinery and equipment as it adds new assembly lines to its existing 224,000 square-foot facility in Butler.
"Multimatic's growth in Butler is yet another sign that Indiana's business friendly environment is making our state a location of choice for companies around the world," said Mitch Roob Secretary of Commerce and chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. "The new jobs and investment that will be created here is welcome news for workers in Northeast Indiana."
The company employs more than 2,000 associates globally, with more than 80 currently in DeKalb County. The Indiana division produces bumpers, door tracks, cross members and roof bows for customers including Ford, Chrysler and General Motors. Multimatic Indiana plans to begin hiring additional engineering associates in 2011.
"Although originally viewed as a short term, distressed supplier situation, through the efforts of many, including the associates at the Butler facility, the IEDC, Dekalb County and the city of Butler, Multimatic has not only committed to Indiana but is growing our business at the Butler manufacturing facility," said Pat Amlinger of Multimatic's Structures and Suspension Group.
The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Multimatic Indiana up to $1.5 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $48,500 in training grants based on the company's job creation plans. The city of Butler will provide additional property tax abatement at the request of the Dekalb County Economic Development Partnership.

Multimatic's expansion in Butler comes just more than a month after Pittsburgh-based steel distributor, Triad Metals, announced its plans to invest more than $10 million to construct a new 170,000 square-foot distribution center at the newly established Rail Connect Business Park east of Columbia City. Triad Metals committed to create up to 35 new jobs by 2013 as part of the project.
