Flavor manufacturer McCormick & Company (NYSE: MKC), a maker of spices, sauces and condiments, officially announced today that it will further expand its operations here, creating up to 14 positions with the addition of a new brand of products being manufactured at the facility.
The company, a global manufacturer and distributor of spices, seasonings and flavors to the retail, food production and food service markets, will increase its investment in the South Bend location. After announcing last year to add a distribution facility, the company will invest an additional $8 million to move an existing brand of products from an outside co-packing facility.
"Indiana's business friendly environment is once again attracting new jobs to our state with McCormick's decision to grow in South Bend," said Mitch Roob, Secretary of Commerce and chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation.
McCormick, which currently employs more than 100 manufacturing and distribution associates in South Bend plans to begin hiring additional associates as operations are shifted to the North Central Indiana facility starting later this year. The company makes a variety of condiments, salad dressings and sauces at the manufacturing center.
"We are excited to announce the investment at the South Bend facility. The expansion will help drive our business in the right direction in our continued efforts to remain competitive," said Alan Gropp, vice president of manufacturing and distribution for McCormick & Company. "The company has a long standing relationship with the South Bend area and is very proud of the talented people that have supported the operation there."
Founded in 1889 in Baltimore, McCormick & Company got its start through door-to-door selling of root beer, juices and glue among other products. Today the company employs more than 7,500 employees with production and distribution facilities on five continents. McCormick markets its products under major national and global brands including McCormick, Lawry's, Zatarain's, Ducros and Schwartz.
The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered McCormick & Company up to $100,000 in performance-based tax credits based on the company's job creation plans. The city of South Bend will provide additional property tax phase-in.
"The decision by McCormick & Co. to expand operations and jobs in South Bend speaks to the unique advantages offered by this community," said Mayor Stephen J. Luecke. "In addition to our strategic location for distribution, we have joined with the state to offer business incentives. Our Business Growth Initiative with the chamber of commerce resolves issues that could hamper growth and provides regular contact so the private sector can do what it does best: create jobs and expand our local economy."
The announced expansion of McCormick & Company's South Bend operation comes just one day after Illinois-based truck parts manufacturer Global Parts Network, LLC, announced it will invest more than $3.2 million to lease and equip 73,000 square feet of space in South Bend for production and distribution of brake shoes for heavy-duty trucks, creating up to 30 new jobs by 2014.
