Siemens Energy announced that it will further invest $421 million to expand its operations throughout North Carolina. These investments span multiple locations that manufacture critical pieces of energy infrastructure equipment and will create approximately 500 new jobs statewide.
“The equipment we produce in North Carolina is helping meet our nation’s unprecedented growth in energy,” said Matt Neal, Siemens Energy’s President of North America. “We are building on a strong, decades-long foundation in the state, supported by a dedicated workforce that consistently rises to meet new challenges and a pipeline of young and eager talent ready to build the machines that will power the United States into the next century.”
Building on the $150 million investment in Charlotte that was announced in February 2024, Siemens Energy will make additional investments to expand its large power transformer manufacturing facility and increase service capacity to meet heightened demand.
Also in Charlotte, Siemens Energy is expanding generator capacity, and will resume gas turbine manufacturing after a six-year pause. Gas turbine manufacturing began in Charlotte in 2011. In 2020, in response to low demand worldwide for gas turbines, Siemens Energy stopped production at its Charlotte factory, converting the space to service gas turbines already installed throughout the U.S., while retaining its ability to manufacture turbines if needed. The company currently manufactures gas turbines in Berlin, Germany.
Today, demand for gas turbines, particularly in the United States, has skyrocketed. Siemens Energy expects the first turbines made in Charlotte to start shipping in the next 2-3 years. The primary focus of this manufacturing will be the SGT6-5000F, a 60 Hz gas turbine that can deliver the equivalent of 260 megawatts (simple cycle capacity).
“Siemens Energy is a valued member of North Carolina’s advanced manufacturing community, and we welcome this meaningful expansion of the company’s operations in our state,” said Governor Josh Stein. “From our state’s world-class transportation infrastructure to our skilled workforce, North Carolina offers manufacturers the best place to do business in the United States.”
Siemens Energy is also investing further in the Winston Technology Center in Rural Hall, NC where the company manufactures parts for power generation systems and services existing power generation equipment.
In Raleigh, Siemens Energy is expanding grid technology project execution, engineering and sales plus research and development.
Siemens Energy’s history in the United States dates back to the 1880s, when the company began early electrification activities and opened its first U.S. manufacturing site in Pittsburgh in 1887. The company has had a presence in North Carolina since 1969. Siemens Energy was spun off to become a separately listed energy technology company from Siemens AG in 2020 and now operates as fully independent.
The announcement is part of a $1 billion investment by Siemens Energy in manufacturing in the United States where the company is helping to deliver more power to more Americans and strengthen the US energy supply chain. Simultaneous announcements of new and expanded manufacturing were made today in Mississippi, Alabama, New York, Texas and Florida.
“North Carolina’s customized workforce training programs continue to pay off by attracting new business expansions from high-impact companies like Siemens Energy,” said North Carolina Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley. “Major industry observers like CNBC, Site Selection, and Business Facilities magazines continue to rank us the top state for business because of our steady and unwavering focus on education and workforce development.”
“For decades, Siemens Energy has been an active part of the Charlotte community, giving back while also playing a vital role in our growth as a leading hub for the energy industry. Siemens Energy’s continuing investment in our city is great news for our economy and for our residents,” said Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles.
“As one of Mecklenburg County’s largest employers, Siemens Energy plays a critical role in strengthening our local economy. The company’s decision to expand its operations here reflects confidence in our skilled workforce and the long-term opportunities Mecklenburg County offers new and existing industries,” said Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners Chair Mark Jerrell
