GE Vernova announced an expansion of its Power Transmission manufacturing facility in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, which produces high-voltage circuit breakers, switchgear products, and instrument transformers. By modernizing and expanding the facility, GE Vernova is helping shorten lead times for critical grid components, enabling utilities to connect new energy-intensive demand, including data centers, to the grid more quickly and reliably.
The expansion is part of a $138 million investment in the Charleroi facility and is expected to create approximately 275 new high-skilled manufacturing jobs through 2028, with additional hiring planned through 2030. These new roles include wiring technicians, mechanics, test technicians, logistics coordinators, and supply chain specialists. Combined with other investments, GE Vernova expects to invest $166 million in Western Pennsylvania and create more than 700 new highly-skilled manufacturing jobs across Pennsylvania.

The company commemorated the expansion today at an event with Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.

The Charleroi expansion is part of GE Vernova's broader plan to invest nearly $1.3 billion across its U.S. manufacturing facilities and research centers between 2025 and 2028 to strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity, accelerate innovation, and help meet growing electricity demand.
The announcement adds to the growing momentum of energy investment in the Pittsburgh area in recent months: Liberty Energy unveiled plans to build a cutting-edge power generation facility in the Pittsburgh region; Homer City coal plant is transforming into a $10 billion gas-powered data center campus, set to generate 4.5 gigawatts of electricity by 2027; and Mitsubishi Electric Power Products (MEPPI) is building an advanced switchgear factory to produce circuit breakers critical for modernizing the U.S. electric grid and supporting data centers and renewable energy.
The region is also at the center of major federal investments in emerging energy technologies. The U.S. Department of Energy recently announced nearly $5 billion in funding for five national hydrogen hubs, including two significant projects with a strong connection to Pennsylvania: the Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub (MACH2) and the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2). Together, the hubs are projected to support more than 41,000 jobs and create significant opportunities across construction, manufacturing, industrial decarbonization and advanced energy deployment.
Taken together, these investments – from power generation and grid infrastructure to hydrogen, data centers and advanced manufacturing – underscore Pittsburgh’s emergence as a national hub for the technologies and infrastructure shaping the future of energy.
