South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster and Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III joined state and local leaders in Florence County to celebrate the groundbreaking of AESC, a Japanese company specializing in advanced electric vehicle battery technology. In December 2022, the company announced its historic $810 million investment, set to create 1,170 new jobs.

“This groundbreaking marks another major milestone in AESC’s commitment to investing in South Carolina and manufacturing electric vehicle batteries,” said AESC U.S. Managing Director Jeff Deaton. “AESC continues to be a global leader in developing next generation EV battery technology, and we’re proud to be further growing our capacity to build those products in U.S. facilities, accelerating the transition to clean energy transportation.”

AESC’s new state-of-the-art battery cell gigafactory will support the company’s multi-year partnership with BMW Group as Plant Spartanburg ramps up production of its next generation electric vehicle models.

Notably, the facility will include an on-site training facility to support a local talent development pipeline.
