SC: Ferroglobe Established Operations in Marlboro County with $20 Million Investment, Creating 19 Jobs

Mar 14, 2024

Ferroglobe, a global producer of silicon metal, announced it is establishing its first South Carolina operations in Marlboro County. The company's $20 million investment will create 19 new jobs.

Ferroglobe produces silicon metal and other silicon-based alloys for critical products such as aluminum, solar cells, semiconductors and batteries. The company has 25 operations globally.

At the new operation on Brickyard Road in Wallace, the company will filter and process quartz from the soil. The quartz will then be distributed to Ferroglobe's silicon plants across the country and used as an input for silicon metal production. Operations are expected to be online in the second half of 2024.

The Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved job development credits related to the project. The council also awarded a $250,000 Rural Infrastructure Fund grant to Marlboro County.

“This new South Carolina operation in Marlboro County will be a key source of raw material for our multi-state operation. It will provide a key ingredient for our silicon metal production which has now been identified as a U.S. Critical Material by the Department of Energy. Silicon metal is an important material for semi-conductors, photovoltaics, aluminum and batteries, and the South Carolina operation will be a critical part of the U.S.-sourced supply chain. Ferroglobe feels welcome in South Carolina and appreciates the hard work officials have performed to assist us in establishing this new operation.”-Ferroglobe CEO Marco Levi

“We are always proud when a business decides to invest in South Carolina. Ferroglobe's new operations in Marlboro County, along with the $20 million investment and 19 jobs it is creating, will make a tremendous impact in the local community. Congratulations on this new project.”-Gov. Henry McMaster

“Ferroglobe's decision to establish operations in Marlboro County reinforces the economic growth we have seen in our state's rural areas. We are pleased to welcome this internationally recognized company to South Carolina and look forward to a long and successful partnership.”-Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III

“Today's announcement is proof that Marlboro County has a business-friendly environment and that we're open for business. We would like to welcome Ferroglobe to the Marlboro County community, and we look forward to a prosperous working relationship in the future.” -Marlboro County Council Chairman Anthony Woods
