The South Carolina Department of Commerce and York County announced that Tuscarora Yarn will expand its production plant York County. The $3.5 million investment is expected to generate 40 new jobs over the next three years.
The Guinn Street plant has operated since 1998 as a specialty yarn manufacturer, although under Four Leaf Textiles and CloverTex ownership until May of 2009 when Tuscarora and CloverTex merged to create the largest specialty yarn company in all of the Americas. The facility now operates under the Tuscarora Yarns name.
“The Town of Clover, York County and the state of South Carolina have been very supportive of textile manufacturing at this location for the past 12 years and Tuscarora Yarns is proud to increase its investment and its workforce at this site,” said David Roberts, chief operating officer for Tuscarora Yarns.
The expansion of the company’s Clover facility will increase production capacity by 20 percent and will involve adding new machinery and equipment along with a small addition. The 190,000-square-foot Clover facility currently has 150 employees, a third of which were hired in the past year.
“South Carolina has a strong history in textile manufacturing, and Tuscarora Yarn’s growth is a positive indication that this industry continues to present opportunities. This announcement is another sign that South Carolina’s focus on the business fundamentals such as keeping taxes and regulatory burdens low is working to attract new jobs and investment, and most importantly encourage growth among our existing businesses. Buddy Motz, chairman of York County Council stated, “Tuscarora’s decision to reinvest in York County is testament to their viability as a leader in the textile industry and York County’s resilience in this difficult economy. We welcome this expansion and the new jobs to the Clover area.”
