Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bill Hagerty and Oak Ridge officials announced today that CANBERRA Industries, Inc., a developer and manufacturer of radiation detection solutions, will transition its safeguards and military product development and manufacturing to its Oak Ridge, Tenn. facility. The announcement represents a capital investment of $1.2 million and the creation of 45 additional jobs at the facility over the next three years, doubling the plant’s current workforce.

“CANBERRA’s additional investment is a testament to the state’s business-friendly environment and workforce, and this reputation will help us achieve our goal of becoming No. 1 in the Southeast for high-quality jobs,” Haslam said. “Our Jobs4TN strategy focuses on expand existing businesses in state, and I appreciate CANBERRA choosing to bring more of its operations to Tennessee.”

“This announcement is another great one for the State of Tennessee,” Hagerty said. “Governor Haslam’s leadership under the Jobs4TN plan has guided us to step up our focus on the existing industry within the state, and that focus is paying off in the form of new jobs for Tennesseans.”

CANBERRA chose to expand the Oak Ridge facility because of its close proximity to Department of Energy sites, including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a safeguards and nuclear research hub, as well as other key customers such as TVA. The 34,000 square-foot facility is located at 107 Union Valley Road in Oak Ridge.

“Our safeguards and military segments are very important to our overall business growth strategy, serving customers such as the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) and the US Department of Defense, and we believe that Oak Ridge is the perfect location in which to create a center of excellence in the development of these products,” said Yves Baumgartner, CEO CANBERRA Industries, Inc. “We look forward to increasing our footprint and resources in this area that is so attractive for the development all types of nuclear technology.”
