Port of Brownsville Overweight Corridor Program Permanently Extended

May 27, 2009

Carlos R. Masso, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Brownsville Navigation District, announced that Governor Rick Perry had signed legislation permanently extending the Overweight Corridor Program, which permits freight to be transported safely and cost efficiently to and from Mexico.

This innovative solution to increase freight and jobs at the Port was sponsored by Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr., in the Texas Senate and Representative Rene Oliveira in the Texas House. Chairman Masso expressed his deepest appreciation to Senator Lucio and Representative Oliveira for their continuous assistance to the Port of Brownsville. Eduardo A. Campirano, Port Director and CEO, stated that “this is great news for the state, the port, the county, the city, and the consumer. The Overweight Corridor Program helps to insure the sustainable growth of the Port – the economic engine for the Rio Grande Valley and Northern Mexico”.
