The state of Kentucky has announced a $5 million contribution to support a new airport terminal in western Kentucky. The expansion at Barkley Regional Airport will improve access, enhance customer service and encourage growth at the Paducah airport.
The long-awaited project is now one step closer to completion. The $5 million award from the Kentucky Department of Aviation added $20 million in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) funding for the project, which includes a new 30,000 sq. ft. terminal building. Modern amenities, including ADA compliant bathrooms, security upgrades, expanded parking lots, a new entrance road and new terminal apron are also part of the project. It is expected to break ground in the spring of 2021 and be completed by the end of 2023.
Aviation continues to be a key growth area in Kentucky for jobs and regional infrastructure investment. Barkley Regional Airport is one of six commercial airports in Kentucky. It was named for former Vice President Alben Barkley and serviced its first commercial flight in 1946.
