Florida-based grocery chain Publix is looking to open three new supermarkets in Kentucky as the company continues its expansion in the Bluegrass State. The new stores would be in the cities of Georgetown, Louisville and Owensboro and all will be approximately 50,000 square feet, reports the publication Grocery Dive. The Georgetown and Owensboro locations will each be adjacent to a Publix Liquors location.
The Georgetown store will be the first Publix location in that city, while the Owensboro location will be the chain’s second in that city, Publix spokesperson Jared Glover said in a statement. The Publix in Louisville is slated to be the company's fourth location in Kentucky’s largest municipality.
Publix opened its first store in Kentucky — where rival Kroger runs more than 100 stores — in January 2024 in Louisville. The company currently operates four stores in the Bluegrass State, is preparing to open its second and third locations in Louisville in early September, WHAS reported last week. Publix operates more than 1,400 stores in eight Southeastern states.
